Wrong books? – Meermanno Museum The Hague
Den Haag
From 20 October The Meermanno Museum will present the exhibition “Wrong books?” The exhibition, compiled by guest curator Bert Sliggers, is about books that have become controversial due to a different spirit of the times and advancing insights. Visitors are explicitly asked to give their opinion. Do we have to intervene or is this all covered by freedom of expression? Who else reads his children Oki and Doki among the Negroes or Tintin in Africa? The same applies to Christian books in which Jewish children are converted or “Gentiles” in Africa through mission or mission. Attention is also paid to the influence of political propaganda during the Second World War, often through children’s books. The discussion about these “wrong” books, which are often spread out in huge numbers, touches on surprisingly topical issues such as racism, sexism and anti-Semitism.
