Fries Museum – Escher’s journey

Leeuwarden

On April 28 this beautiful exhibition opened in Leeuwarden, the birthplace of M.C. Escher, who this year is European Capital of Culture.

Escher’s journey makes the development of M.C. Escher can be felt as a visual artist. An important role is reserved for the influence of the locations where he stayed during his life. From the gray flat Netherlands of the twenties of the twentieth century to the sun and the Méditerranée mountains. On the basis of approximately eighty original works, supplemented with letters, drawings, photographic material and personal objects, visitors follow in the footsteps of M.C. Escher. The innovative exhibition design enhances the experience of Escher’s life and work.

The exhibition was praised by the public and press with wonderful reviews about the lighting design of our hand:

Dagblad van het Noorden: ‘Lumineuze Belichting…’
NRC: …Alles is zo verbluffend mooi uitgelicht….
New Scientist: ‘The Fries Museum has lit Escher’s works using some very subtle and precise spot projection; this and the trompe-l’œil monochrome paintwork on the walls of the gallery form a modestly Escherine puzzle all by themselves. Purely from the perspective of exhibition design, this charming, illuminating, and comprehensive show is well worth a visit.’
