Cartography & Curiosities-Maritime Museum

The new exhibition in the Maritime Museum Cartography & Curiosities shows how the world was discovered from Amsterdam and how the world came to Amsterdam during the Golden Age. The presentation contains maps of Amsterdam map makers from the top collection cartography of Het Scheepvaartmuseum. This exhibition shows how our Amsterdam ancestors found their way at sea in the Dutch Golden Age and how their journeys determined the worldview. On the basis of the age-old maps themselves, the visitor travels to the locations that formed Dutch history: South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and Brazil.
The second part of this presentation is entitled Curiosities: a treasure room full of eye-catching objects that brought the whole world into the Dutch house in the Golden Age. Here visitors are amazed by wall maps, globes, atlases, travel journals, but also by souvenirs, trinkets and art objects, all of which symbolize the journeys from the first part of the exhibition.
The exhibition will be open to visitors on 10 May 2019.
